According to reports, as of October 2018, 40% of the computers in use today run Windows 7. While it seems they are the best loved operating system when it comes to Windows right now, all good things must come to an end. That includes Windows 7, well sort of.
Microsoft has announced that as of January 14th 2020 they will no longer support the loved operating system leaving many to wonder what they can do. Does this mean you need to get a new computer or upgrade your operating system? Let me explain.
Every once in a while Microsoft decides to stop supporting an OS, which means there will be no new feature updates, or security patches. That doesn’t mean that the operating system will not work at all anymore, just that support for it is going away. If after January 14th, a new security flaw if found, anyone still using Windows 7 will be on their own to worry about it. So what can you do to prepare for this date if you are using a Windows 7 machine? Here are my thoughts.
Keep in mind I said “Updates” not “Upgrade”. Make sure you run all the updates that Windows 7 has available. These updates are there to make sure any known security holes are patched and your computer is safe to use online. If you refuse to run these updates, you will be leaving yourself open to the vulnerabilities that Microsoft has fixed.
Make sure you have a good backup system in place. If you continue to use your windows 7 computer after the 2020 date, you will be on your own. Any new vulnerabilities will not be patched, and you can be at risk. If you have a good backup system you won’t have to worry as much because all your data is safe. If you don’t already have one in place, Husky Logic can help you set one up. Give us a call.
If your computer is getting up there in age 7-8 years, and you have been thinking about it anyway, look into getting a new computer. There is a lot of talk about Windows 10 being the worst operating system (OS) out there, but don’t let that sway your opinion. Windows 10 is different from 7 so it takes a lot of getting used to. In addition, most of the complaints came from people who upgraded their current PC’s to windows 10. A machine that ran Windows 7 out of the box, will NOT support Windows 10. Don’t even try to upgrade it. Even though Microsoft says you can, 98% of all Windows 7 machines that have done this upgrade, have crashed within the first 2 years. Some even instantly. Just save yourself the headaches and don’t try it.
Check your Antivirus program and make sure it’s up to date, and will support Windows 7 after 2020. Some antivirus programs will stop supporting older OS’s and you need to make sure yours will.
Does this mean you can’t use your system after the January deadline? No. Not at all. It just means if you choose to you will be on your own. Microsoft will not answer any tech support questions and there will be no more updates. Your machine will still run, you just will want to be careful what you do online. Of course, Husky Logic will be there for you. If you find yourself running into issues or just have a question, give us a call. We will be more than happy to answer them for you.
